Crljenak is an old autochthonous Croatian sort. Unfortunately this sort is about to be extinct.
The importance of this sort is in the fact that many sorts derive from it; like the Italian Primitivo, American Znifandel and Plavac Mali. The American Znifandel is genetically identical to the Crljenak, and the Plavac Mali derives from Crljenak and Dobričić.
From all this sorts we can make strong, red and dry wine. The aroma incorporates plums, blackberries, raspberries and cherries.
